Water Vole Survey

Description

Following our fantastically successful water vole surveys in May and September 2023, our wonderful local expert team are returning to train us all in trying to understand the size of the population of water voles on Long Mead and in the Wharf Stream. If you'd like to be trained up to join NRN's water vole survey team, which contributes to the annual National Water Vole Monitoring Programme, are willing to get your boots a little wet and muddy, and won't shy away from exploring along bankside vegetation, then come and join us on Saturday 18th May.  Here we will share with you an introduction to all things Water Vole as well as training on how to survey and fill in standard monitoring forms.

Those of you have attended an introductory session in the past you can move straight on to surveying on the day.

This will be an annual survey, around the same time each year. For the survey we advise you to come prepared wearing suitable clothing (long sleeves, trousers, sturdy boots or wellies and gardening gloves to protect your hands from brambles and nettles).  Expect to experience a varied bankside gradient, so a ranging (walking) pole or similar might come in handy.

Please make sure that you sign up on the website as we really need to keep track of numbers.

This workshop will be held at Long Mead barn and in our species-rich floodplain hay meadow. Please travel by foot, bus or bike if you can. The S1 Bus stops at the Talbot Inn, just outside our gate. We are between the Swinford Toll Bridge and the Talbot Inn (opposite the pub) recogniseable by the row of rusty birds on the gate and a thatch barn in the orchard.

If you need to travel by car please use the Eynsham Sports Pavillion car park (1 Oxford Rd, Eynsham, Witney OX29 4HG). It is marked with a green pointer on the map. It is 7 minutes walk from us.
