Description

In response to demand, we want to reunite the network's group of keen local lepidopterists! Although we didn't manage a coordinated formal survey last year, this year we have a plan in place and would like to invite all interested parties to return for this refresher butterfly survey technique training.

Whether you know them as schmetterlings, papillons or butterflies, all are welcome to participate as Peter Philp of the Upper Thames Branch of Butterfly Conservation returns to train or refresh volunteers in the standard method for recording butterflies on a transect.

We will spend about half the time going over the theory and paperwork, and then we will go into the field to practice (though don't worry, we're not expecting you to find butterflies in March!)

Please wear appropriate clothes and footwear for the field session. You may wish to bring a notebook and pencil. However some basic paperwork will be provided.

Butterfly Transect walkers often use binoculars to help identify the smaller species. Do bring them along if you wish.

If we have time at the end, tips will be shared on identifying our common butterflies in the field.

Peter Philp is an active volunteer and leader within the Upper Thames Branch of Butterfly Conservation, a UK charity dedicated to protecting butterflies, moths and their habitats. He serves as Chairman of the Upper Thames Branch, where he helps coordinate volunteer efforts, lead field events and butterfly surveys, and support training in butterfly identification and recording techniques. He regularly leads guided walks and survey sessions across Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Buckinghamshire, helping members and the public learn about local butterfly species and how to monitor them for conservation purposes. In his branch roles he also supports wider countryside butterfly surveys and volunteer coordination, contributing to Butterfly Conservation’s citizen-science and habitat protection work.
