This walk will be the third of 2026 in an informal series of birding outings for NRN birding beginners and experienced birders alike. The walks  start at 9.00am outside at The Talbot and will finish by 11.00am. This is a new route for 2026. Anyone who can only do an hour can finish at the half-way stop. Please bring binoculars if you have them, and wear suitable footwear (it is often a little wet).\r\nThese walks take place throughout the seasons with NRN's local birding experts. They are at a relaxed pace with regular stops, so are suitable for all ages and abilities. These are meadows that we have leased from Oxford Preservation Trust to restore for nature as part of our Thames Valley Wildflower Meadow Restoration Project, which is been selected as one of Oxfordshire's Strategic Projects in its Local Nature Recovery Strategy.\r\n\r\nIf the soil is still hard and dry we will continue our restoration activities on Long Mead - eg creating our compost from molehills and willow woodchip, seed shucking, sowing next year's tree and wildflower seeds, creating our new tree nursery beds, starting the work of turning the Neyotts Willow Coppice into Wet Woodland, which is a habitat almost as rare as our floodplain meadows. \r\n \r\n\r\nPlease bring your own drinks. Apart from its benefits for a whole host of invertebrates, mammals, reptiles and birds, it is hugely important for us humans in this period of climate change. It not only provides an important means of carbon sequestration but equally important with our increased rainfall, it plays a vital, effective, cost-efficient and eco-friendly role in natural flood management. It does this by slowing and absorbing flood water as it flows across the floodplain. Wet woodland species include Bay willow, Alder, White Birch, Grey willow, Black poplar (and Oak on the higher ground) among others. We are planning to take cuttings and to gather most of these tree seeds locally. The Beavers have already offered their help!\r\nWe will leave some of the willow coppice for use in hedge-laying and restoring the river banks in the floodplain meadows that we have leased. For the rest, we have been trialing, the least invasive and cheapest way of removing the stumps left by our predecessors. Despite much scepticism in some quarters, we have established that putting black compost bags over the top and tying them with string kills them off in 4 months. \r\n\r\n \r\nWe are also planning to create a living library of extremely rare local native black poplar within the wet woodland. This will form a breeding population of male and female trees to maximise the gene pool and make the species resilient again, at the same time as instantly increasing the environmental value of the site. \r\n\r\nLocal expert Anna Rowlands eyeing up the Black Poplar at the Wharf Stream Willow Coppice - Photo Catriona Bass\r\nOnce established, the project will seek to re-create the native understorey and improve the habitat for birds and mammals by creating artificial habitats such as otter holts and bird boxes. \r\nJoin us all as we continue work to clear areas of the existing monoculture, alongside partners from Oxford Conservation Volunteers. \r\n \r\nFor those who prefer their wildflowers we will also being continuing planting out our hand propagated plants, either in the adjacent meadow or in Swinford Meadows depending on whether the soil has rehydrated sufficiently. \r\nPlease dress suitably in outdoor clothing and bring your own drinks. This time we will be in the ancient Swinford Meadows across the river from Long Mead.\r\n \r\nThis NRN project began in 2020 in the Witney Road playground during Covid, since then NRN members have planted nearly three kilometres of hedgerow in eight schools and on community land in villages in and around Eynsham. The idea, inspired by Freeland farmer Robert Crocker, is to connect up our villages, rivers and meadows by hedgerow!\r\n\r\nThe whips that we all planted last year now flourishing, and so we are planning to plant 200 metres more this year, on the an exciting new section of land that we have leased for us all to restore adjacent to Eynsham's allotments.  See the map on the right of this page, under 'Location'\r\nIt is always helpful if you can arrive at the beginning so that we can brief everyone together. But if you can&rsquo\;t make it then, we&rsquo\;d love to see you anyway. We will leave from Long Mead at 10.00, follow the white dots to the lock (see map below) and then up the towpath on the Swinford side to the meadow. The QR codes take you to Google Maps with directions. There will be cake but please bring a thermos and a picnic lunch, spades, secateurs and gloves if you have them. We can provide them if you don't. Oxford Preservation Trust has kindly leased Swinford Meadows to Long Mead Foundation and Nature Recovery Network for us to restore for our local wildlife. \r\n \r\n\r\nSaturday 6th Feb - Join OCV's hedge-laying training workshop &amp\; practical - 10am - 3pm. Please REGISTER.\r\nSunday 7th Feb - Hedge Laying Day at Swinford Meadow - all welcome - 10am - 3pm Please REGISTER\r\n\r\n \r\nNo previous experience is needed to attend this training but most of the basic training will happen on the saturday. Past participants of our hedge-laying workshops are particularly encouraged to join in as, in line with our NRN mission, we are wanting to build, over time, our own local expert hedge-laying team. \r\n \r\nUse the map below to get to Swinford Meadows.
